I love discovering authentic New York pizza joints, my recent visit to Dario's on Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead left an indelible mark on my pizza-loving soul. Let me take you on a journey through this hidden gem in Nassau County, Long Island. The moment I opened the door, I was greeted by that unmistakable aroma that only a properly calibrated pizza oven can produce. I ordered what I consider the true test of any pizzeria: a regular slice and a pepperoni slice. The attention to detail in these offerings spoke volumes about Dario's commitment to the craft. Let's start with the foundation - the crust. In the world of New York-style pizza, the interplay between crispiness and flexibility is paramount. Dario's has mastered this delicate balance with remarkable precision. Both slices exhibited that coveted thin, crispy bottom with subtle char marks, evidence of proper oven temperature control. The structural integrity was impeccable - the dreaded "pizza flop" was completely absent, allowing for the traditional New York fold without compromising the slice's composition. Fantastic!!! The regular slice served as a beautiful canvas, showcasing the pizzeria's fundamental prowess. The sauce-to-cheese ratio demonstrated remarkable restraint and understanding. The seasoning was thoughtfully applied, enhancing rather than overwhelming the natural flavors of the high-quality ingredients. The pepperoni slice elevated the experience further. The spicing struck that perfect equilibrium - assertive enough to announce its presence but respectful enough to maintain harmony with the base elements. The pepperoni itself achieved that sought-after slight curl at the edges, creating textural contrast and concentrating the flavors. Gov's take on the pepperoni is 8.1 For context, finding this level of consistency and quality in both regular and specialty slices is increasingly rare in today's pizza landscape. Dario's represents what I consider a guardian of authentic New York pizza traditions while maintaining impeccable quality standards. Gov's take of 8.2 for the regular slice positions this establishment among the elite pizzerias in Nassau County. Dario's on Nassau Boulevard isn't just another pizzeria - it's a testament to the enduring art of New York pizza craftsmanship. For those seeking an authentic slice experience that honors tradition while delivering consistent excellence, this West Hempstead location deserves a prominent place on your pizza pilgrimage list. I'll certainly be returning to explore more of their menu, though they've already proven their mastery of the fundamentals.

Wonderful pies made with best Italian ingredients with expert care. The sausage used is among the best I have ever had on pizza. This is one of the very best pizzerias in the NY area. The nutella bombelino is to die for too! The should sell ice cold Manhattan Specials!

Always searching for a slice that on first bite makes me slow down and savor. Yelp reviews and Portnoy had me bookmarking Dario's for some time. After a walk around Hempstead Lake with Lisa E. , we had worked up a little appetite. Pepperoni slice valid! Thin crispy crust, zero flop, thin savory cups was Just right! Lisa and I shared 2 Roman slices, the sausage and mushroom and the tomato with a squiggle of burrata. All I can think of now is as good as the sauce and toppings were, the crust was something other worldy! There remains so many specialty slices that caught my eye, I cannot wait to return!

***NYC STYLE PIZZA IN LONG ISLAND*** ***FANTASTIC SPECIALTY SLICES AND SANDWICHES*** WHAT'S WRONG WITH LONG ISLAND PIZZA? It's been said that there's no such thing as a bad slice of pizza, and most would agree with this sentiment. But really, the vast majority of pizza restaurants in Long Island are making their round pies in the same mediocre manner. With a fairly thick & doughy crust, that is really not cooked very well. And packed with excessive cheese, that drips oil on your pants, and makes you cuss. DARIO TO THE RESCUE Dario Carosi, a trained pastry chef from Italy, decided to move abroad to the US in 2016. Once here, he worked at different bakeries, until he landed a job at Brooklyn's famous L'industrie Pizza in Williamsburg. A pizzeria that specializes in thin crispy-crust round pies, with interesting toppings like burrata, figs, and spicy Soppressata. And so it was here I feel, that Dario discovered his true calling - to use his vast knowledge of baking, to create delicious specialty pizzas, sandwiches, and even bombaloni Italian doughnuts. So after leaving Lindustrie, Dario experimented with making pizza, and having pizza parties at people's houses. Then in 2022, Dario had the opportunity to open his own restaurant in Hempstead. And let me tell you, the fruits of his labor at this pizzeria have proven to be quite spectacular. SPECIALTY IS WHERE IT'S AT FOR ME Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy regular pizza slices. A few months ago, I had a regular cheese slice over at a place called Luigi's on 5th ave in Brooklyn, and it was so friggin delicious, I'm still thinking about it. But my all time favorite pizza slice, has always been the specialty square. And I have to admit, Dario has stolen my heart with his Roman style rectangular pan pies. The crust on these is delightfully crisp, and he's created slices that are probably better than anything I've ever eaten. For example, the Diavolo square, with marinara sauce, spicy soppressata, and topped with creamy stracciatella cheese, is a crispy spicy delight. Then there's others, like the Calabrian Chicken, Red Pepper-Oni, and the Italiano - to name a few - that are delicious as hell also. WHAT ABOUT THE ROUND? In April 2023, Dave Portnoy from the famous One Bite Pizza Reviews visited Dario's, and awarded his round pie an 8.3, which a very respectable score. (See the video here: https://youtu.be/1dg7rFdT1Ek?si=Twv2UDt4qoapmdad ) But what makes this appraisal even more impressive, is that One Bite had previously rated his former employer, L'industrie's round pie at a 7.9. So now, what is my opinion of the round? Well, the crust is very light, crispy and delicious. And it's topped with a very tasty sauce, but - and me saying this will probably piss some people off - not really enough cheese for me. And others that have joined me for a few slices, have backed up this assertion. Now with the pepperoni or the white slice this slight deficiency is not as noticeable. And I'm certain that if I ordered a whole pie, and requested a little extra cheese - this slight adjustment would probably lead me to pizza heaven. THOSE SANDWICHES AND DOUGHNUTS ! I would be doing a disservice, if I didn't mention the glorious sandwiches here, each made with fresh baked crispy focaccia bread. Along with ingredients like fried chicken cutlets, Stracciatella cheese and vodka sauce. Or imported prosciutto, fried eggplant, burrata, arugula and balsamic glaze. So don't sleep on these, as they're outrageously good. And finally, there's the Italian Bombolini, aka cream filled doughnuts, made fresh daily by the former pastry chef himself. And if you've ever bit into a jelly doughnut, and thought "where's the jelly?", you certainly will not experience that here. As these doughnuts are super plump with fillings such as jelly, cannoli, nutella, pistachio, apple, and lemon. In addition, keep in mind that these doughnuts sell out quickly if you wish to sample a few. THAT LITTLE EXTRA TOUCH Most everyone understands that sometimes it's the little details that make things great. And you can see this first hand at Dario's. For example, each pizza slice is warmed up in a special crisping oven to make sure you get the perfect crunch. And then depending on the slice, it will be topped with either fresh Stracciatella, a special sauce, or imported grated cheese. And this my friends, along with everything else, is what makes the experience at Dario's something special. So the next time you're eating a doughy, oily, crappy slice at some other pizzeria in Long Island, make it a point to visit Dario's, and experience the craftsmanship of a top baker and pizza chef.

After a fellow Yelper, Dan, recommended I try out Dario's, I immediately put it on my list. According to Dan, "Dario was a bread and pastry chef in Italy. He then came to the US, and worked for a very famous pizzeria in Brooklyn called L'industrie. He opened his own pizzeria about a year ago. His specialty slices are really unique and delicious. His regular slices are very thin and crispy, but I think a little lite on the cheese." I must say, Dan was spot on. Dario's serves some of the best pizza I have had on the Island, similar to pizza that you would get in Brooklyn. The slices are thin and crispy and they have a good selection to choose from. From what I saw, there were regular, white, eggplant, and spicy vodka slices, though their menu offered more. They also some some of the best quality Italian doughnuts I have ever had, which came in the flavors of Nutella, Lemon, and Pistachio. The restaurant is small but clean with modern decor. There are a couple of tables inside and two benches outside. Expect to wait in line because there are a lot of people who are looking to grab a slice and go. I like the fact that they showcased some original sicilian olive oil and soda in the front; it gives a sense of heritage contrasting from a classic american pizzeria. --- PLEASE READ: I am creating a new Pizza Review Series in which I will be rating slices from over 30 different pizzerias in my local area in Nassau County, Long Island. I will use a regular cheese slice as a baseline and a specialty slice as added depth to the review. These rating are solely based on my opinion and taste preference so please do not be offended if one of my ratings does not align with your opinion on the pizza. I am excited to have Dario's as my fifth review in this series! #5 Dario's Pizza Cheese slice: Thin and very crispy with no flop. Crust was salty and crunch all around. Perfect amount of sauce with good flavor. Barely any oil dripping from the slice. Could have used a little more cheese, but honestly not a deal breaker. Overall, I rate it a 9.4/10. Specialty slice (Eggplant): The slice was on a thicker bread but still crispy. Eggplant was thinly slices and blended well with the sauce. The stracciatella cheese on top complimented the slice well. I just wish the eggplant was breaded and lightly fried. Overall, I rate it a 8.8/10. For more ratings please see my Pizza Ratings Collection on my profile.
